Top quality music courses require top quality venues!

At Yorchestra, we are fortunate to have access to two excellent venues, providing all the facilities needed to ensure that participants get the most out of their time on the course.  From 2022 onwards, during each course all orchestras will be based at the same venue, making the practicalities as easy as possible for parents/carers with more than one child taking part.

York University Music Department

The courses for Maestro usually take place in the Music Department at the University of York, which is specially designed for rehearsing a full symphony orchestra with all its sections. (Please note that music students from the University may occasionally use some of the other rooms in the Department for practice during Yorchestra courses.)

For end-of-course concerts, the orchestra uses the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, a superb concert venue which is used to host concerts both by the University’s own ensembles and by professional performers.

The courses and end-of-course concerts for Yorchestra Young Strings and Yorchestra Young Wind also take place in one of the large rehearsal spaces in the University Music Department, other than at Easter, when they are at Heslington Church.

Since Easter 2022, we have started using the new venue of Archbishop Holgate’s School. The large main hall and additional conference spaces mean that Mezzo, Primo, Young Strings and Young Wind can all happen in the same venue, with extra space for sectionals, and both indoor and outdoor spaces for break and lunchtimes.

Getting to Yorchestra

We know that the logistics of getting children and instruments to and from courses at the start and end of the day can sometimes be challenging.  If you would like to share lifts, we may be able to put you in touch with other families travelling from your local area.  Please contact us to enquire.

There is stairs-free access at both the University of York and Archbishop Holgate’s School.
