Orchestras

Yorchestra has five different orchestras, meaning that players of all abilities have a great opportunity to have fun making music and new friends, whether they have been learning their instrument for just six months or are accomplished musicians who have been playing for several years.

Yorchestra 1

If you are grade 7 or above, then this is the orchestra for you!  Most players are aged 15 – 19 years, although younger players may be accepted if they reach the required standard.

Clarinettists  applying for Y1 must be able to bring with them clarinets in both Bb and A.  Because the repertoire is primarily classical, and because this orchestra always plays from original scores rather than arrangements, Y1 does not offer places for saxophones as first instruments.

Yorchestra 2

Yorchestra.14.5This is for players of Grade 4 – 6 standard.  Players at Grade 4 level will usually have completed at least one term in Year 7, though this is not essential.

In addition to the main Yorchestra 2 rehearsals, Y2 players will normally get to rehearse pieces as a separate windband and string orchestra, as well as enjoying workshops in specific areas such as chamber music and jazz.  As with Y1, the repertoire is essentially classical, but the addition of these further sectional ensembles means that Y2 players also have the opportunity to play film music and jazz / big-band music.  Y2 will play either from original scores or from arrangements, depending on the level of difficulty of the music involved.

Yorchestra 3

This is for players of Grade 2 – Grade 4 standard.  As with Y1 and Y2, the repertoire is essentially classical, but will include other styles, including film and folk music.  Arrangements are carefully selected to suit the abilities of the players on the course.

Y_summer14.7Yorchestra 4

This is a fun and lively one-day introduction course aimed at first-time players with at least 6 months’ playing experience and up to Grade 1+ standard.  As with Y3, the music chosen is carefully arranged to fit the players’ abilities.  Although the course is just one day, Y4 players will learn a surprisingly large number of pieces, ready to be shown off to friends and family in the end-of-course concert in the afternoon!

Yorchestra Young Strings

yoyosA special course for string players aged 6 and 7 years old who have been learning their instrument for at least one term. Led by a specialist string teacher, the course is run over two mornings (recognising that younger children may not be able to concentrate for the duration of a full-day course).  The emphasis is on developing confidence and having lots of fun playing simple pieces together!
